September 5th — Day 2
There’s good news and bad news about yesterday. First the bad news. I didn’t watch any convention coverage. Now the good news: The World’s Best Football Team, The Dallas Cowboys defeated the hated New Giants 24-17. Kevin Ogletree and Sean Lee were my MVPs. You can’t discount Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware‘s performances either. Jason Witten, coming off a lacerated spleen, even playing was just great. All around great game. I smell a Super Bowl in the offing for this team.
September 6th — Day 3
The early portion of the night must be Hollywood night. Before the pledge allegiance by an amazing Gabrielle Giffords, the amazing Scarlett Johansson gave a brief speech. Then Eva Longoria gave a surprisingly good speech. Compared to the doddering performance of Clint Eastwood, Democratic celebrities are downright political scientists.
Next up was more babbling by CNN. For Dispatches 2016 I’m watching Fox News. The governor of Montana, Brian Schweitzer launched into a speech that was more coherent than his 2008 speech (that was lauded for some reason) but in the end I don’t know that he added anything of consequence. At least he stayed on topic, mostly. In the quadrennial trade of castoffs between the parties, Republicans got Artur Davis and Democrats Charlie “Anderson Cooper’s Twin” Crist. Based on the two speeches I’d say the Democrats got the better of that deal.
A quick debate from CNN pundits speculating about the alleged attempt to bury Vice President Joe Biden speeches among tonight’s speeches. They really have nothing to talk about.
Tanned like George Hamilton failed presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry is fresh from Myrtle Beach with a tough speech about Mitt’s foreign policy foibles. Kerry even owned the being “for it before he was against it” meme that was used to devastating effect against him when he ran for president. He had some pretty good lines in this speech. If he spoke this well eight years ago things might have been different for him. Eh, probably not. He was a bad candidate running a horrendous campaign.
Jeez, more chatter about from CNN talking heads about Biden’s supposed weakness. Oh wait Jill Biden’s wife is out to introduce her husband. Boy, she’s really distracted by the teleprompter. She can’t focus on her speech because she’s worried about losing her place. Maybe she’ll announce she’s running for president. Nope, she’s thanking troops and talking up her husband.
Joe Biden is really mellow in this video which highlights his middle classness. You know this over empahsis on the middle class at this convention is odd. I had the most middle class upbringing a child of two immigrants could have so I appreciate a focus people like my parents. I know middle class folks have suffered immensely in the recession, however, what about the plight of the poor? No one is talking about them. They’re invisible at this convention and really at every convention. Politicians shouldn’t be able to get away with ignoring the people who need the most help. It’s shameful.
Joe’s out to “Your Love Keeps Lifting me Higher”. I wonder what Wolf Blitzer has to say about tonight’s musical selections. Actually no I don’t.
I don’t think Joe’s been watching the convention since he isn’t quite sure when Michelle Obama spoke. It was Tuesday, Joey, the day the convention started. Joe’s speech is off to a pretty meandering, subdued start. He must trying to ruin the good work the people at Onion have done in covering him. Biden made some good distinctions between Willard Mitt and the president’s visions. Glad Joey got the word “Forward” into his speech. I hadn’t heard it all night. Decent speech even though he literally said “literally” literally 1000 times. The crowd finally got into it at the end.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve grown into a huge Obama fan. I am however tired of the onslaught of emails from the Obama team. They’re oddly personal. If I get a fundraising appeal that says “What’s up, O? It’s your boy B…” I’m closing my email account.
Obama stays up until 2 am? He’s doing something wrong, Bush used to be in bed by 9:30. Nothing ages a person like being president. It could be the hair plugs and botox, Biden looks younger than he did four years ago while Obama had aged 10 years. Vice President is clearly the best job to have.
President Obama launches into his speech using all his familiar verbal tics. Unfortunately he seems to be opting for the vague route when it comes to his plans. Obama needs to pick it up. I keep hearing there’s a plan but I still haven’t heard what this plan entails. Whew, I was worried he wouldn’t use the word “Forward”. As these things go that was a very good speech. At the end I thought he was going to invite people to join his church and pass around the collection plate. What disappointed me was the general vagueness of his speech. I hoped he would lay out more of a plan. I did like that the speech was generally positive.
The confetti is up and the Saturday Night Live hugging and beauty queen-like waving commences signaling the show is over.
I’m probably biased but overall the Democrats had a better, more focused, more lively convention than the Republicans. They unceasingly touted the candidate and everybody stuck to the “Forward” theme no matter how annoying I found it. CNN was CNN. I wish they’d dump the partisan pundits. You know what commentators like Ari Fleischer and Roland Martin are going to say before they open their mouths. They add nothing to the discussion. More David Gergen less everybody else. That’s it for now. I’ll see you for more political shenanigans on October 4th.
